Most of you know Lowe’s as the great home improvement store that it is. They carry an incredible amount of items for home & garden as well as commercial/industrial tools.

Although their current selection is vast, Lowe’s does not yet carry bird spikes! Bird control is becoming an important part of any pest control operation for all industrial, commercial, and residential applications, so hopefully Lowe’s gets the picture soon and starts to integrate bird control solutions in its arsenal of products. There are bird spikes at Home Depot, but not currently at Lowe’s

Until Lowe’s starts to sell bird spikes, we’re going to recommend that you check out the spikes selection on Amazon. They have the best prices on new & used units in addition to incredibly fast shipping (which is one reason why they’re the biggest online retailer). It will save you time and money vs. wandering the long hallways of Lowe’s or any other super-mega-warehouse-store in search of nonexistant bird spikes.

Why Make Your Own Bird Spikes?

Homemade Bird Spikes

Bird spikes are an invaluable tool in the battle to get rid of pest bird infestations. The first line of defense against birds is to provide a physical barrier to keep them from entering or landing. The two primary physical barriers are bird netting and bird spikes. If birds are roosting on very specific ledges or surfaces, spikes are usually the best option. If birds are inhabiting a large area and causing substantial damages, it may be prudent to invest in larger bird netting system. It would take forever to make your own bird netting, but there’s hope for you if you want to take a stab at making some bird spikes/nail strips.

NOTICE: If you’ve reached this guide with the intention to make your own homemade bird spikes strips, then you’re in the right place. But before you spend your valuable time, money, and hard work in making your own spikes, we’ve got to let you know that your best option is to buy bird spikes strips. View our bird spikes store above to view some of the best deals on the web

Home Made Bird Spikes Guide

Ok, you’ve checked out Amazon’s selection of dirt cheap bird spikes but you’re still set on making your own, so we’ll start the guide here:

*Disclaimer: this is non-professional guide for creating bird spikes. We do not claim any liability if you injure yourself, waste too much money, or end up with an ineffective bird spikes solution.

What you will need:

Nails… get the longest you can find (click here if you need to order some)

*optional: Nail Gun (here’s a good one)

Strip of Wood – at least 1/2″ thick, 2 inches wide. Match to length needed

Hammer

Paint to match whatever surface on which you plan to install the spikes

Estimated project time: 1 hr for each foot of spikes

The Process

Step 1: Measure the area where you want to eventually install your spikes. Make sure you get the length as well as the width from the wall or back edge to the front edge of any ledging.

Step 2: Set up the base strip, face down. You will be hammering the nails from the back side of your mounting strip so that the nails point outwards.

Step 3: Hammer the nails. Hammer two nails across from each other at opposing 45 degree angles (you want to get the “\/” shape this way). Using two angled nails will provide more coverage and effectiveness for your DIY spikes. You can even add an extra center spike for the “best” coverage. The nails in this arrangement will look like a “\|/”. Make sure you have enough width in your base to support a 3-wide nail setup.

Step 4: Optional Paint your base + nails to match the surface they will be installed on.

Step 5: Wait for paint to dry

Step 6: Installing your Bird Spikes

This guide is meant only to show how to make your own bird spikes. To learn how to install your bird spikes visit our bird spikes installation tutorial or click here for our how to install bird spikes video.

How to Get Rid of Birds on Your Roof

Roof Spikes

Roof spikes simply another type of Bird Spikes. Well, not really another type, but more of a synonym of the term geared toward a specific application of needle strips on roofs.

Roof spike strips are generally used (yea, you guessed it) on roofs, to keep birds like pigeons, starlings, crows, vultures, buzzards, and sea gulls from roosting on your valuable property.

Birds can cause damage to roofs by pecking, building nests, or simply leaving their acidic droppings that can slowly eat away at your shingles, tar, or other roofing material. They can also cause health problems: inhaled bird dropping cause BIG problems for human respiratory systems. *Note: We’ll soon have a section up on Bird-Related Illnesses to go over various types of diseases in humans that stem from contact with birds or bird waste.

For businesses, birds and bird droppings are unsightly and may lead to customer unease or disgust if it is in an area with any human traffic. So, it is imperative to stop birds before the get a chance to land on any rooftop or roof ledging.

The best place to get the cheapest roof spikes is usually here at Unbeatable Sale

Basic Information

Bird Spikes

Devices like bird spikes are used in the bird control industry to keep birds from landing on things. They keep pest birds from roosting and therefore fall under the “roost inhibitor” category of bird control products.

The theory is simple: birds will not want to land on sharp needles. Most of the time, they are smart enough not to try and land on or in a set of spikes, but even when they do try (when shelter or food desire is great enough) they are greeted with a prick from the spikes, or cannot find a comfortable way to roost within the bird spikes matrix.

Please note that there are always exceptions to this. Sometimes birds will be able to roost within a spikes matrix, or they may sacrifice their own comfort if their desire to roost or eat is extreme. Barring these rare exceptions, bird spikes are reported to be the most effective method in stopping birds from roosting in specific areas and ledgings.

Spike Materials

In general, all spikes are the same: a set of spikes set on a base mounting strip. There are a few variations of spike strips based on materials and dimensions. In most cases, the spikes themselves are made of polycarbonate (plastic) or metal (stainless steel or aluminum). The base of the spikes can be made of either metal or plastic. Spike bases that are made of plastic tend to be more flexible and can be installed on plain surfaces.

Bird Spikes Widths

Spikes come in a variety of widths, from narrow (2″), regular(5″), and extra wide (7″+) to accomodate different surface requirements. A narrow surface like a window sill might require the narrow strips, while someone trying to apply spikes to signage and large surface areas may want to use the wide or extra wide sizes of spikes.

Top Bird Spike Manufacturers

There are many companies that manufacture and sell bird spikes, including Bird-X, Bird B Gone, Nixalite, and Bird Barrier. These companies all have their own variation of bird spikes.
