How To Keep Birds and Other Animals Out of Gutters:

Gutter spikes are a form of bird spikes specifically designed to keep birds from roosting, nesting, and defecating in gutters and drainage systems.  Similarly to roof spikes, they are designed to specifically deter birds from landing. The benefits of using gutter spikes include reduced costs from cleaning bird messes & repairing damage caused by birds. If the birds are in a residential setting where birds are roosting in or around gutters and causing annoyances, a reduction in pest bird population can be expected after gutter spikes are installed.

Installing Gutter Spikes for Birds

They are generally installed via nailing, screwing, or gluing directly into the gutter mounting. Gutter Point by Bird Busters allows for simple “snap-on” installati0n in which you can simply snap the spikes onto the edging of the gutter.

Gutter Spikes Manufacturers

Gutter Spikes for birds are manufactured and distributed by a few companies, including Bird B Gone and Bird Busters.

Why Make Your Own Bird Spikes?

Homemade Bird Spikes

Homemade Bird Spikes

Bird spikes are an invaluable tool in the battle to get rid of pest bird infestations. The first line of defense against birds is to provide a physical barrier to keep them from entering or landing. The two primary physical barriers are bird netting and bird spikes. If birds are roosting on very specific ledges or surfaces, spikes are usually the best option. If birds are inhabiting a large area and causing substantial damages, it may be prudent to invest in larger bird netting system. It would take forever to make your own bird netting, but there’s hope for you if you want to take a stab at making some bird spikes/nail strips.

Home Made Bird Spikes Guide

Ok, you’ve checked out Amazon’s selection of dirt cheap bird spikes but you’re still set on making your own, so we’ll start the guide here:

*Disclaimer: this is non-professional guide for creating bird spikes. We do not claim any liability if you injure yourself, waste too much money, or end up with an ineffective bird spikes solution.

What you will need:

  • Nails… get the longest you can find (click here if you need to order some)
    • *optional:  Nail Gun (here’s a good one)
  • Strip of Wood – at least 1/2″ thick, 2 inches wide. Match to length needed
  • Hammer
  • Paint to match whatever surface on which you plan to install the spikes

Estimated project time: 1 hr for each foot of spikes

The Process

Step 1: Measure the area where you want to eventually install your spikes. Make sure you get the length as well as the width from the wall or back edge to the front edge of any ledging.

Step 2:  Set up the base strip, face down. You will be hammering the nails from the back side of your mounting strip so that the nails point outwards.

Step 3: Hammer the nails. Hammer two nails across from each other at opposing 45 degree angles (you want to get the “\/” shape this way). Using two angled nails will provide more coverage and effectiveness for your DIY spikes. You can even add an extra center spike for the “best” coverage. The nails in this arrangement will look like a “\|/”. Make sure you have enough width in your base to support a 3-wide nail setup.

Step 4: Optional Paint your base + nails to match the surface they will be installed on.

Step 5: Wait for paint to dry

Step 6: Installing your Bird Spikes
