Pigeons on ledge

Pigeons on ledge

If you live in an urban area, you’ve seen this image before: pigeons roosting on a ledge, leaving droppings and nest materials in their wake. You need to get rid of them at all costs! The following tactics are not recommended, but if you want to WASTE your money and time trying to get rid of pigeons, you will want to do the following:

  • Constantly “Shoo” away the pigeons
  • Pay for professional cleanup services (this can get REALLY expensive)
    • Also, it is a recurring cost.. cleaning up doesn’t solve the problem
  • Make your own homemade pigeon spikes
  • Use sound repellers or visual scares

Really… do you want to do any of the above? Try this:

The best way to stop pigeons from roosting

Simply put, installing pigeon spikes (another name for “Bird Spikes”)will be the best solution to your problem. 99.9% of the time, pigeons will stop roosting if spike strips are installed.

Imagine yourself trying to rest on a bed of nails. Just the thought illicits thoughts of discomfort and pain. Just like us, birds are aware that sharp objects are painful, and avoid landing and roosting on the pigeon spikes as they would avoid any other source of pain.

Why use Pigeon Spikes

Spike strips provide a physical barrier that make it physically more difficult for birds to occupy the area. Sound repellers and visual devices provide no such coverage, as they are only sensory irritants. If birds need food or shelter bad enough, they will overcome such obstacles easily. Pigeon Spikes go beyond sensory irritation and provide a more effect coverage by directly excluding birds from areas.

Do I Need Pigeon Spikes?

You need to install pigeon spikes when:

  • Pigeons are roosting in an undesired location
  • Pigeons are causing health risks
  • Acidic droppings and messes from pigeons are causing damage
  • You have an are where droppings are causing visual/aesthetic problems
  • Pigeons are roosting in an area that humans also occupy

Bird Spikes

Basic Information

Bird Spikes

Bird Spikes

Devices like bird spikes are used in the bird control industry to keep birds from landing on things. They keep pest birds from roosting and therefore fall under the “roost inhibitor” category of bird control products.

The theory is simple: birds will not want to land on sharp needles. Most of the time, they are smart enough not to try and land on or in a set of spikes, but even when they do try (when shelter or food desire is great enough) they are greeted with a prick from the spikes, or cannot find a comfortable way to roost within the bird spikes matrix.

Please note that there are always exceptions to this. Sometimes birds will be able to roost within a spikes matrix, or they may sacrifice their own comfort if their desire to roost or eat is extreme.  Barring these rare exceptions, bird spikes are reported to be the most effective method in stopping birds from roosting in specific areas and ledgings.

Spikes are also known as:

Spike Materials

In general, all spikes are the same:  a set of spikes set on a base mounting  strip. There are a few variations of spike strips based on materials and dimensions. In most cases, the spikes themselves are made of polycarbonate (plastic) or metal (stainless steel or aluminum). The base of the spikes can be made of either metal or plastic. Spike bases that are made of plastic tend to be more flexible and can be installed on plain surfaces.

Bird Spikes Widths

Spikes come in a variety of widths, from narrow (2″), regular(5″), and extra wide (7″+) to accomodate different surface requirements. A narrow surface like a window sill might require the narrow strips, while someone trying to apply spikes to signage and large surface areas may want to use the wide or extra wide sizes of spikes.

Top Bird Spike Manufacturers

There are many companies that manufacture and sell bird spikes, including Bird-X, Bird B  Gone, Nixalite, and Bird Barrier. These companies all have their own variation of bird spikes.
